After losing two major superstars due to trade demands and a variety of players to injury and other complications, the Sky had the perfect excuses and reasons not to win this season. As a matter of fact, when they started out the year at the bottom of the stack, no one seemed to care, or even really notice. Then, all of a sudden, they dropped a 24 point beating on the Minnesota Lynx for their first home victory of the season and everything changed. In their last game, they went into double overtime trying to extend their three game winning streak before losing to the Dallas Wings.
In tonight’s game, they trailed 31-11 in the second quarter and once again had every reason to give up and lay down. Instead, they rallied behind the inspired play of veteran guard, Allie Quigley, who led the way with 25 points, while tying a career-high with 6 three pointers.
There was something different about the attitude of players and the vibe surrounding them that made it easy to believe that no lead was too big for them and that they would easy come back and win this game. As luck would have it, not only did they come back but they won by eleven points.
Also instrumental in the win was, Courtney Vandersloot. She brought energy to the team’s previous win streak, and that passion was definitely felt tonight. She only scored 2 points, but she pulled down three rebounds and dished out six assists while playing 34 minutes in the comeback victory.
Breanna Stewart had a double-double in the losing effort for the Storm, as she scored 25 points and added 11 rebounds.
